You, the night before Sam's birthday
“Hang on, it's tomorrow?”
Every gift takes time you already don't have: remembering, deciding, buying, the message, the receipt. Move two sliders and Dukky will count the hours, what they're worth, and what Dukky costs on our assumptions. Every assumption is on show, and you can change any of them.
Your gifting, by the hour.
Change our assumptionsOur guesses, your call
Our assumption: a birthday, a work anniversary and one at the end of the year.
Our assumption: remember, decide, buy it, write the message, file the receipt.
Our assumption: remember, decide, find it and buy it, wrap and post, file the receipt.
Our assumption: you do it yourself up to 25 people. Past that, an office manager or People and Culture person does.
Our assumption: asking managers what the person likes, then getting the OK.
We've used AU$100.
Our assumption: about AU$75,000 a year plus super, over about 1,700 working hours.
Our assumption. Dukky's service fee is worked out on it.
With Dukky, we've allowed about 1 minute a gift card (approve it, or let it go out by itself) and about 10 minutes a physical gift (pick one of Kwak's ideas and order it from the shop yourself).
Time back, every year
68 hours back a year, 1.8 working weeks, worth AU$3,405. Dukky costs AU$1,635 on these numbers, so you'd come out AU$1,770 ahead.
- That time is worth
- AU$3,405
- Dukky, on these numbers
- AU$1,635
- You come out ahead by
- AU$1,770
Dukky, on these numbers: Autopilot at AU$990 a year, plus AU$189 in service fees (5% + AU$0.50 on each of 54 gift cards, AU$3.50 each), plus AU$456 for 24 gift researches past the 12 a year included, at AU$19 each. The gifts themselves aren't counted: you'd buy them either way.
The sum: 90 gifts (30 people × 3). Today: 54 gift cards × (20 + 8) min + 36 physical × (75 + 8) min = 75 hours. With Dukky: 54 × 1 min + 36 × 10 min = 6.9 hours. Each hour at AU$50. A working week is 38 hours.
How we worked this out.
Well-recognised employees were 45% less likely to leave within two years (Gallup, 2024).
- Gifts. Your people times 3 gifts a year each (a birthday, a work anniversary, one at the end of the year), split into gift cards and physical gifts by your slider.
- Today. 20 minutes a gift card and 75 minutes a physical gift. Past 25 people, we assume someone else does it, and spends 8 more minutes a gift asking around and getting the OK.
- Whose time. Yours up to 25 people, at AU$100 an hour. Past that, theirs at AU$50 an hour: about AU$75,000 a year plus super, over about 1,700 working hours. Both are our assumptions.
- With Dukky. About 1 minute a gift card: approve it, or let it go out by itself. About 10 minutes a physical gift: you pick one of the ideas from Kwak, Dukky's research agent, and order it from the shop yourself, with nothing more to pay Dukky. Before Kwak can research a gift, Dukky needs 2 or 3 things about the person: their questionnaire answers, or a couple of interests or notes you add. The time that takes isn't counted here. Your own minutes a gift can't go below Dukky's, so the calculator never counts a gift as quicker today.
- What Dukky costs. Autopilot at AU$990 a year, plus the service fee of 5% + AU$0.50 on each gift card (AU$3.50 on a AU$60 card). Gift research: 12 a year included (1 a calendar month), then AU$19 each. An unused one doesn't roll over to the next month, so if your physical gifts bunch up in a few months, you'll pay for more than we've counted. The gifts themselves aren't counted: you'd buy them either way.
- The rest. A working week is 38 hours and a working day 7.6. Hours and dollars are rounded, and each difference is taken from the rounded figures, so what you see adds up.
Take the hours back. Leave it with Dukky.
Kwak kwak. Add the people you look after, choose their occasions, and Dukky watches every date from there.
